Jurassic World Adds X-Mens Omar Sy (Bishop) To The Cast

omar syFrench actor Omar Sy is certainly starting to make a name for himself here in the U.S., with strong crossover performances in films like 2011’s The Intouchables and Michel Gondry’s trippy Mood Indigo (out later this year). While Hollywood has a habit of taking French actors and giving them villainous roles in heist movies, Sy’s next character will hopefully be something far more nuanced, as he has been added to the cast of Colin Trevorrow’s highly anticipated semi-sequel, Jurassic World. This is turning out to be one of the more exciting and talented casts for an upcoming tent-pole flick in a while. I mean, sure, there’s the Avengers sequel, but we’ve been there before.

While it’s kind of petty for me to have been paying attention to this, I’ve been invested with how large the “world” of the title would be, always hoping that the cast isn’t just a majority of white Americans. And it’s done a pretty good job so far of keeping the multi-cultural aspect intact. Beyond the French Sy, we have the British Idris Elba, India’s Irrfan Khan, and the original Jurassic Park‘s B.D. Wong, who was born in…San Francisco? Dammit!

Women are definitely under-represented, as Bryce Dallas Howard has been the only femme role filled so far. As for the white guys, we have lead Chris Pratt, the antagonist Vincent D’Onofrio, Jake Johnson, Nick Robinson, and Ty Simpkins. I can’t wait to see who gets added next, though it probably won’t be Sam Neill or Jeff Goldblum unfortunately.

We still aren’t too clear on the plot details, with only the film’s timeline — it’s set 23 years after the original film — and setting revealed. (Also, Pratt plays a military guy, sort of.) As you can see below, Sy’s Twitter announcement shared no details on his character.

Fan of this saga from the beginning, I’m very proud to be part of the cast for JURASSIC WORLD #jurassicworld @UniversalPics @colintrevorrow

His tweet was soon followed up by Treverrow’s French welcome, confirming the casting notice.

Très heureux d'accueillir @OmarSy dans Jurassic World. @JurassicParkFR

And if you aren’t quite familiar with Sy’s face just yet, you will be by the time Jurassic World hits theaters on June 12, 2015. He’ll soon be seen in zillions of theaters as Bishop in Bryan Singer’s X-Men: Days of Future Past, and in a lot fewer theaters for Henrik Ruben Genz’s thriller Good People, opposite James Franco and Kate Hudson. He’s also got Stephen Gaghan’s crime thriller Candy Store, with Robert De Niro, shooting later this year. Get your eyes red and check Sy’s Bishop out in the preview below.
