Almaguer started his television career in Salinas, California at KSBW in 2000. He would become a reporter for KCRA-TV in Sacramento in 2003 and joined WRC-TV in Washington, D.C. in 2006. Almaguer was hired in 2009 by NBC News based out of Burbank, California. He has appeared on NBC Nightly News, Today, and MSNBC. Almaguer won an Edward R. Murrow Award for Spot News in 2004 and won an Emmy Award for the San Diego wildfires of 2007. Almaguer has also won awards from the National Association of Hispanic Journalists.
Today Miguel is a correspondent for NBC News out of the Los Angeles bureau. He makes frequent appearances on The Today Show and NBC Nightly News.
